Monday final filing day for city election

Monday is the final day to file for a position on the Dec. 21 special east-ward election for the Rockdale City Council.

Denise Holmes Wallace is the only candidate heading into the final week of filing.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Melody Dawson in September.

Winner will serve the remainder of Dawson’s unexpired term, expiring next spring.

Milano council okays budget, annexation

MILANO—City council members adopted their 2014 budget on Oct. 8 at a special meeting held at the Milano Civic Center. The city’s budget for the year is listed at $213,341.

Also adopted was an ordinance to annex Milano ISD properties into the city limits that were not already there.

Only one person was there to speak during the public comment section of the meeting, according to city secretary Carolyn Vinton.

The council’s next regular meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 at the civic center.

School board meeting scheduled for Monday

The Rockdale ISD school board will meet for a brief regular session at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Central Administration Building, then will conduct a board workshop at 6 p.m.

Agenda items include the 2013 tax roll. Workshop topic will be a legislative update to the Texas Education Code.

Bridge, Apache Pass due historic markers

Texas Historical Markers will be placed at the location of Faubion Pedestrian Bridge near Sugarloaf Mountain and Apache Pass on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Dr. Lucile Estell of the Milam County Historical Commission, which is sponsoring the events, said the bridge marker will be dedicated at 10 a. m. and the Apache Pass marker at 2 p.m.

Bridge marker will be on County Road 264. “Take the Hanover Road (FM 2095) in Gause from US 79,” she said.

Apache Pass is located eight miles northwest of Rockdale on FM 908.

AnumberofMilamCounty dignitaries have been invited to attend, Dr. Estell said. “Both sites are of significance in the recent Comprehensive Management Plan for the El Camino de los Tejas National Historic Trail,” she said.

Staff members of the Texas Historical Commission and the El Camino Trail have also been invited to attend.

Thorndale council buys vehicle for city police

THORNDALE— City council members in Thorndale, meeting last Wednesday, okayed purchase of a new Chevrolet Tahoe for the police department, according to City Secretary Denise Melde.

In other business, the council nominated Don Culp for the Milam Appraisal District and Alan Hejl for the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District.

Rockdale VFD giveaway scheduled for April 5th

The next annual giveaway night for the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department has been scheduled for April 5, 2014, according to Mike Korenek, RVFD spokesman.

“We chose this date to avoid conf licts w ith several other activities, most notably Easter,” Korenek said

Water line flushing set Oct. 23rd in Rockdale

City of Rockdale crews will f lush water lines in all areas of Rockdale after midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 23, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.

Knauf asked city water customers to run their cold water taps upon arising the next morning until the stream runs clear.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
